If your Labor Day plans included a trip to the southeastern United States or the Caribbean, then Hurricane Dorian has likely caught your attention.
The category 5 storm made landfall in the Bahamas this morning with 185 mile winds and an epic amount of rainfall. That’s to say, you might want to rethink those travel plans.
Given the storm, most airlines are offering travel waivers for flights. A waiver will allow you to charge your travel planes for free, rather than pay a change fee.
American Airlines, for instance, has issued a travel alert for 15 airports in Florida. If you bought your ticket to one of those locations by August 29, 2019, then you can opt to have your flight rebooked to a later date, up to 331 days after your original ticket date, and pay only the fare difference.
Delta is offering a similar deal for travelers headed to eight different cities in Florida as well as two cities in Georgia, and United is offering to waive fees for flights to and from a number of Florida locations as well as some in the Bahamas. The same goes for travelers on Southwest as well as JetBlue.
Bottom line: a number of airlines are canceling flights, and even if your flight isn’t canceled you’re likely looking at some heavy delays.
If you have a flight scheduled, you may want to consider contacting your airline and picking a new, perhaps safer, time to go on that big trip.
